The Logic of Quantum Mechanics: Volume 15 (Paperback): Enrico G. Beltrametti, Gianni Cassinelli The Logic of Quantum Mechanics: Volume 15 (Paperback)
Enrico G. Beltrametti, Gianni Cassinelli; Edited by Gian-Carlo Rota; Foreword by Peter A Carruthers
R1,729 Discovery Miles 17 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1981, this book forms volume 15 of the Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications. The text provides a clear and thorough treatment of its subject, adhering to a clean exposition of the mathematical content of serious formulations of rational physical alternatives of quantum theory as elaborated in the influential works of the period, to which the authors made a significant contribution. The treatment falls into three distinct, logical parts: in the first part, the modern version of accumulated wisdom is presented, avoiding as far as possible the traditional language of classical physics for its interpretational character; in the second part, the individual structural elements for the logical content of the theory are laid out; in part three, the results of section two are used to reconstruct the usual Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics in a novel way.

Introduction to Geometric Probability (Hardcover): Daniel A. Klain, Gian-Carlo Rota Introduction to Geometric Probability (Hardcover)
Daniel A. Klain, Gian-Carlo Rota
R2,268 Discovery Miles 22 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Here is the first modern introduction to geometric probability, also known as integral geometry, presented at an elementary level, requiring little more than first-year graduate mathematics. Klein and Rota present the theory of intrinsic volumes due to Hadwiger, McMullen, Santalo and others, along with a complete and elementary proof of Hadwiger's characterization theorem of invariant measures in Euclidean n-space. They develop the theory of the Euler characteristic from an integral-geometric point of view. The authors then prove the fundamental theorem of integral geometry, namely, the kinematic formula. Finally, the analogies between invariant measures on polyconvex sets and measures on order ideals of finite partially ordered sets are investigated. The relationship between convex geometry and enumerative combinatorics motivates much of the presentation. Every chapter concludes with a list of unsolved problems.

Combinatorics: The Rota Way (Hardcover): Joseph P.S. Kung, Gian-Carlo Rota, Catherine H. Yan Combinatorics: The Rota Way (Hardcover)
Joseph P.S. Kung, Gian-Carlo Rota, Catherine H. Yan
R3,289 Discovery Miles 32 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gian-Carlo Rota was one of the most original and colourful mathematicians of the 20th century. His work on the foundations of combinatorics focused on the algebraic structures that lie behind diverse combinatorial areas, and created a new area of algebraic combinatorics. Written by two of his former students, this book is based on notes from his influential graduate courses and on face-to-face discussions. Topics include sets and valuations, partially ordered sets, distributive lattices, partitions and entropy, matching theory, free matrices, doubly stochastic matrices, Moebius functions, chains and antichains, Sperner theory, commuting equivalence relations and linear lattices, modular and geometric lattices, valuation rings, generating functions, umbral calculus, symmetric functions, Baxter algebras, unimodality of sequences, and location of zeros of polynomials. Many exercises and research problems are included, and unexplored areas of possible research are discussed. A must-have for all students and researchers in combinatorics and related areas.

R5,893 Discovery Miles 58 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The deep and original ideas of Norman Levinson have had a lasting impact on fields as diverse as differential & integral equations, harmonic, complex & stochas tic analysis, and analytic number theory during more than half a century. Yet, the extent of his contributions has not always been fully recognized in the mathematics community. For example, the horseshoe mapping constructed by Stephen Smale in 1960 played a central role in the development of the modern theory of dynami cal systems and chaos. The horseshoe map was directly stimulated by Levinson's research on forced periodic oscillations of the Van der Pol oscillator, and specifi cally by his seminal work initiated by Cartwright and Littlewood. In other topics, Levinson provided the foundation for a rigorous theory of singularly perturbed dif ferential equations. He also made fundamental contributions to inverse scattering theory by showing the connection between scattering data and spectral data, thus relating the famous Gel'fand-Levitan method to the inverse scattering problem for the Schrodinger equation. He was the first to analyze and make explicit use of wave functions, now widely known as the Jost functions. Near the end of his life, Levinson returned to research in analytic number theory and made profound progress on the resolution of the Riemann Hypothesis. Levinson's papers are typically tightly crafted and masterpieces of brevity and clarity. It is our hope that the publication of these selected papers will bring his mathematical ideas to the attention of the larger mathematical community."

Invariant Theory and Superalgebras - Regional Conference (Paperback): Frank D. Grosshans, Gian-Carlo Rota, Joel A. Stein Invariant Theory and Superalgebras - Regional Conference (Paperback)
Frank D. Grosshans, Gian-Carlo Rota, Joel A. Stein
R853 Discovery Miles 8 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings the reader to the frontiers of research in some topics in superalgebras and symbolic method in invariant theory. Superalgebras are algebras containing positively-signed and negatively-signed variables. One of the book's major results is an extension of the standard basis theorem to superalgebras. This extension requires a rethinking of some basic concepts of linear algebra, such as matrices and coordinate systems, and may lead to an extension of the entire apparatus of linear algebra to signed modules. The authors also present the symbolic method for the invariant theory of symmetric and of skew-symmetric tensors. In both cases, the invariants are obtained from the symbolic representation by applying what the authors call the umbral operator. This operator can be used to systematically develop anticommutative analogs of concepts of algebraic geometry, and such results may ultimately turn out to be the main byproduct of this investigation. While it will be of special interest to mathematicians and physicists doing research in superalgebras, invariant theory, straightening algorithms, Young bitableaux, and Grassmann's calculus of extension, the book starts from basic principles and should therefore be accessible to those who have completed the standard graduate level courses in algebra and/or combinatorics.

Indiscrete Thoughts (Paperback, Reprint of the 1997 ed.): Fabrizio Palombi Indiscrete Thoughts (Paperback, Reprint of the 1997 ed.)
Fabrizio Palombi; Gian-Carlo Rota
R3,830 Discovery Miles 38 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Indiscrete Thoughts gives a glimpse into a world that has seldom been described - that of science and technology as seen through the eyes of a mathematician. The era covered by this book, 1950 to 1990, was surely one of the golden ages of science and of the American university. Cherished myths are debunked along the way as Gian-Carlo Rota takes pleasure in portraying, warts and all, some of the great scientific personalities of the period. Rota is not afraid of controversy. Some readers may even consider these essays indiscreet. This beautifully written book is destined to become an instant classic and the subject of debate for decades to come.
